Gateway

  • What is it?Gateway
Gateway provides long term structured workplace learning for senior students and is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission
Students likely to participate are those interested in a particular career in a specific industry, or those students who wish to collect a wider range of skills than can be provided at school.
Local businesses are asked to provide a placement. Learning will focus on Industry Specific Unit Standards, so that the student may take a meaningful pathway toward a career in that area.
Students attend their work placement for one day per week for the school year and are given the opportunity to ‘trial’ their career choice.

GAP Year

  • Most have heard of it, many have debated it, but few may actually understand it. In reality, a gap year is simply a year, or even less, taken out of formal education.

This year may occur during the transition from secondary school to tertiary education, or even after completing all formal education but before entering the workforce. Regardless of when it occurs, there are many options for gap years that include travel, work or volunteering.

There are several organisation that can assist with overseas placements. Some of these are:
  • GAP YEAR NZ Ltd
A New Zealand based site with a good range of information and a variety of opportunities
  • Lattitude

Lattitude Global Volunteering is the Gap Year volunteering charity. They have gap year opportunities which can enable you to discover a world of possibilities in 8 countries across the globe.

  • Latitude NZ Newsletter - June 2010 PDF document

  • Education FirstEF High School Year Overseas. This opportunity allows students to experience living in another culture. An exchange can open their eyes to the world and will shape their future direction. Students can choose from 8 destinations and 3 different departure dates.

Tutors Worldwide. As many have come to realise there is enormous value to be gained from a break between secondary and tertiary education. It can offer new challenges, opportunities to travel and to see and experience life in other cultures, and give an added maturity that is of both immediate and enduring benefit.
There are many different ways in which such a year can be organised. Tutors Worldwide seeks to offer the school leaver the opportunity to work in an overseas school environment as a tutor at either a prep or secondary(high) school. In a secure, stable and supportive environment a tutor is given board, lodging and a financial allowance in return for performing a range of tasks and duties at the school’s discretion.
