Tanzania Trip - January 2011

World Vision has invited eight students from Wellington College to visit Ibwera Tanzania in January 2010. If you are interested open and read the document below carefully and submit your application to Mr Lau no later than 3.15pm on the 7th May 2010.

Over a decade ago, a bunch of Wellington College students decided that going without food for 40 hours just wasn’t practical for athletic students with busy schedules.

Rather than doing the traditional World Vision 40 Hour Famine – eating only glucose sweets and fluids to simulate what life is like for children who don’t have enough food – the boys decided they could raise just as much money to help people in developing countries by holding a 40 Hour Runathon.

Since its inception in 1998, the Wellington College Runathon has raised over $500,000 for World Vision. Every year since 2003 we have on average raised over $55,000 for World Vision and in 2004, the event raised almost $73,000 – which set a record at the time for the most ever raised by one school. The College continues to be one of the top Famine fundraising schools in New Zealand and last year we raised just over $61,000 and were again the school that raised the highest amount of money for the 40 Hour Famine.

Students run laps of the school grounds from 6am Friday which continues through the night for 40 hours. The students ask donors to sponsor them for every lap they complete. The school is split into nine teams, each sponsored by a local business, which inspires strong competition to see which team can raise the most money.
