Doctor P. F. McEvedy

  • Dr P F McEvedyDoctor P F McEvedy, the Donor of the McEvedy Shield, was an Old Boy of St Patrick’s College, Wellington. He chose to follow a medical career and furthered his studies at Guy’s Hospital, London. A biographer described his success as a medical student and as a sportsman as being due to “indomitable courage and the fighting spirit.” While in London he achieved worthy examination results and on the sporting field he earned international honours by representing England in rugby.

Upon his return to New Zealand, Dr. McEvedy practised Medicine in Wellington. He became a prominent figure in the medical life of the city and an inspiring leader in everything that made for a clean and wholesome sport.

As a sporting administrator Dr. McEvedy had a profound influence in both Wellington and New Zealand. He became President of the Wellington Rugby Union and in 1934, became Chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union. He was Chairman of the New Zealand Boxing Council and was Patron of the Combined St Pat’s Old Boys’ Athletic Association Club.

He believed that sporting achievements were worthy goals to strive after. He encouraged young men to try hard, and gave them the ideal that the ‘trier’ has a true place in the sporting arena, that defeats accepted in the spirit of true sportsmanship are but stepping stones to victory.

Dr. McEvedy’s love for sport and true sportsmanship moved him to promote the spirit of athletic competition by donating the shield that bears his name. His belief that to strive hard is the true measure of success is embodied in the current shield competition. He knew and encouraged the feeling of pride that each boy must experience and develop in representing his school worthily.
