Welcome to the Wellington College Girvan Library

  • Gary GirvanThe Girvan Library is named after long-serving and former Deputy Principal and English Teacher Gary Girvan. It is located in the centre of the College and is the heart of learning, information and resources for our students.

    The Library reopened on Monday 22nd March 2010 after a period of refurbishment.

    Opening Hours are 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday

Library Use and Areas

  • video surveillanceEntering the Library

    Leave your school bags and coat in the Library Bag Room.
    This is a secure area with recorded video surveillance.

  • Reading, Research and Study Areas

    food freeDownstairs Reading Area (by windows) - Students can use this area at all times except when a class is booked in during a teaching period.

    Downstairs Research Area (tables) - Students can use this area at all times. When a class is booked during a teaching period there will still be a few spare tables available.

    Upstairs Research Area (tables) - Students can use this area at all times except when booked during a teaching period, lunchtime, before or after school.

    Upstairs Silent Study Area - This area cannot be booked. It is available to all students at any time. It is for silent study only - No talking.

  • Leaving the Library

    Return all unwanted books and magazines to the issues desk. Don't leave books on the floor or desks.
    Put chairs in and keep the Library tidy for everyone.

  • Class Bookings

    If your class is booked into the library you must:
    • Wait quietly outside until the teacher arrives
    • Leave all bags in the Library Bag Room
    • Keep noise to a minimum once inside the Library

Borrowing Information

  • BooksWhat you can borrow

    • You can borrow up to 5 books or magazines (back issues only) at a time
    • You can borrow books for 3 weeks
    • You can renew books once (unless it is on reserve for another student)
    • You cannot borrow the latest magazines - they can only be read in the Library. You will need to exchange your ID card for a magazine until it is returned to the issues desk

    Other borrowing information

    • Use your school ID card
    • Do Not let other students take books out on your card - You will be held responsible if the book is lost.
    • Return all items on or before the due date. If an item is overdue then you cannot get any more books out.

Finding Information and Referencing

  • Finding Books

    All books are on our Digital Library Catalogue which is called Access-It.
    Ask Library staff for help if you cannot find what you are looking for.

  • The Dewey Decimal System

    All non-fiction books are organised using the Dewey Decimal System.

    Referencing your work

    Wellington College uses the APA (American Psychological Association) style for referencing. The University of Auckland provides an excellent site on how to use the APA style.

  • Going Online

    In a few weeks our Library will go online.
    You will be able to log in on the internet and:
    • search the catalogue
    • reserve books
    • write book reviews
    • ask questions...etc...

Photocopying, Printing and Scanning

  • PhotocopierPhotocopying

    • This costs 5 cents per A4 page
    • Black and White only
    • You must use your school ID card to photocopy or print
    • You can load money onto your ID card at the stationery shop

    Printing

    • You can print from any computer in the school to any photocopier
    • This also costs 5 cents per A4 page

    Instructions:

    1. Go to the usual print menu on the computer
    2. When you see the screen (below) - choose the "Any Copier" option
    3. Go to a photocopier and swipe your card
    4. The photocopier swipe screen will tell you what to press next (You can cancel a print job from this screen if you need to)

Computers

  • ComputerComputers

    There are 12 computers in the Library for student use which:

    • cannot be booked by class groups
    • must be used for educational purposes only
    • cannot be used for games (whether school related or not). If you wish to play school sanctioned educational games then use C1 or C2 Computer Rooms - See here for further info

    Important:
    • Screen monitoring software has been installed on all computers and they are being monitored periodically.
    • If you are caught breaking the rules, your access to the school ICT system could be blocked for 2 weeks.

    NetbookNetbooks

    The Library has two sets of 16 Wireless Netbooks which can be booked out by teachers for their classes when using the Library.

    At a later date these might be made available to students to use in the Library when not booked by classes.
